Fiona sat in front of the computer and cried. She went through old Facebook photos and came across an album full of family pictures. Her mom looked so beautiful and happy, just like Fiona liked to remember her.
It was six months ago and the waves of pain still kept coming. The worst ones were the ones that came after she started thinking that she was starting to recover from her grief. Seeing these pictures now made it worse. The images made her mother feel so real and alive. The idea that she was rotting in her grave was not just awful, it was also unbelievable.
Fiona found herself writing an e-mail addressed to her mom. She was not sure why she was doing it, she just did it.
“I miss you, mommy.”
She sent the e-mail and felt better. She knew better than to expect a reply.
Which was exactly what she got a few seconds later.
“I miss you too, honey.”
Fiona’s heart stopped. This could not have been a prank. She was the only person other than her mother who knew the password to her e-mail since she was the one who set it up. The answer was too quick and spontaneous and the person on the other side had to expect Fiona to send her dead mother an e-mail before hacking into her account.
The idea that the e-mail was genuine was ridiculous, but was still more convincing than the idea that this was some sort of prank. Besides, Fiona did not know anyone cruel enough to find it funny.
Before she over-thought it and arrived at the conclusion that she has lost her mind, Fiona decided to quickly send a reply. She wanted to hear back from her mother even if she was just a figment of her deteriorating imagination.
“Oh, mommy. I love you so much. It hurts so much without you. Are you in heaven?”
After ten seconds that felt like forever she received a reply.
“Yes, honey. I am in heaven and it is so wonderful. I got to speak to Jesus and meet your grandparents. They are both sitting here next to me.”
Fiona fought her doubts. A small voice in her head was whispering to her that someone was making fun of her, but she refused to believe it.
“Can we Skype? If you have computers in heaven, surely we can Skype?”
Fiona’s hand was trembling as she sent out the e-mail.
The familiar Skype ringtone started playing. Fiona peed a little out of excitement.
The screen opened up and there they were: her mother and grandparents. Sitting together wearing white clothes and surrounded by white clouds. They were smiling and waving at her.
“Hello honey!” Her mother said. “we miss you too!”
Fiona could not explain this miracle, but she just accepted it with open arms. It was so amazing it felt like a dream.
Oh no. Dread filled her heart. It can’t be…
She woke up.
God dammit!!!
