13. Speechless

Steve woke up without a mouth. Instead of lips that could part to reveal his teeth, gums and tongue there was only smooth skin.

He touched his mouth in disbelief and then jumped out of bed and ran to the nearest mirror. There was no mouth, as if someone erased it.

Steve poked his tongue out. It pressed against the flesh covering his mouth and pushed it outwards. Steve’s head was spinning. This was impossible – and yet it was.

He was too upset to drive so he called an ambulance. The paramedics were also freaked out when they saw him. There was nothing they could do other than rush him to the hospital.

That was where the real circus started. Every single employee came to look at him. He was poked and probed and heard lots of half sentences, but no one was talking to him.

Eventually one of the doctors noticed his distress. With the help of a nurse, Steve and the doctor moved to the room next door which was empty and were left there alone.

The doctor was trying to interrogate Steve to figure out why this was happening, but they both knew he was wasting his time. There was nothing that can cause a mouth to seal shut without a trace. There is no medical condition for that and there were no scars to indicate a medical procedure that would make Doctor Goebbels proud, unless somehow someone has managed to develop surgery techniques that leave no scars at all.

Steve was listening to the doctor and felt as if he was watching an episode of The Twilight Zone.  The doctor explained how the condition was not life threatening. Steve could breathe through his nose and have an IV taking care of nutrition and dehydration, but the doctor strongly recommended cutting a slit where the mouth was supposed to be and for that he needed Steve’s permission.

Steve did not need a lot of convincing. He was nodding vigorously before the doctor had a chance to finish his sentence.

When Steve woke up he was in the recovery room and the first thing he did was gently touch his mouth. It was still sealed just like before. Why did they not operate on him? What happened? There was no one in the room.

Steve got up and stopped in front of a small mirror. He looked at his face and saw a scar where his mouth was. They did try to open it and now he understood what went wrong. The scar faded in front of his eyes, turning into smooth skin.

In panic he rushed out and stopped in his tracks.

About half the people outside also had their mouths sealed shut, patients and hospital staff. The other half was too panicked and confused to help. The ones freaking out the most were the people whose mouth was in the process of slowly disappearing.

Steve wanted to scream.
But he could not, he had no mouth.
